How does sleep affect seasonal depression (SAD)?
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is fundamentally a circadian rhythm disorder β not just a mood disorder triggered by dark months. In winter, reduced light exposure causes a phase delay in the circadian clock: melatonin stays elevated too long in the morning, cortisol rises too late, and the sleep-wake cycle drifts later.
